The time is fast approaching when the core of the Queen’s Wharf precinct will be closed to the public and construction by Destination Brisbane Consortium will commence. The first of the noticeable changes begin on 1 January 2017.

Preliminary work has been going on for some time. Soil sampling has been undertaken in the vicinity of Queen’s Wharf Road. The footings of the former Immigration Depot have been investigated. Notices have been placed in the precinct to advise the general public of changes to bus and pedestrian routes around the precinct.

Bus change information can be viewed on the TransLink website.

You can read the changes to footpaths at http://www.destinationbrisbaneconsortium.com.au/pdf/QW-Traffic-Transport-Fact-Sheet.pdf

Both the Commissariat and National Trust House at Queen’s Wharf were open for the 2014 Brisbane Open House (BOH) held on 11-12 October 2014. This fifth annual event allowed visitors to explore both buildings, for the first time viewing the basement level of National Trust House, a space not previously open to the public.

The aim of BOH is to enrich Brisbane residents and visitor’s affinity with the city through encouraging them to explore, re-examine and engage with Brisbane’s built environment. Visitor numbers have increased steadily since the first BOH was held in 2010.

The recently conserved B1 level of National Trust revealed some unexpected items. Just inside the doorway of one of the rooms, a right foot man’s boot was found beneath the floorboards. Construction of this part of the building occurred in 1899. It is believed that the boot was deliberately placed there at time. Since conservation of the room, the boot has been replaced in its original position with a Perspex cover and under floor lighting so that it can be viewed.

Also not usually seen by visitors was the plaster wall inside the east-facing wall of the 1899 extension to National Trust House. Agricultural department workers are believed responsible for pieces of paper cut from newspapers and magazines between 1915 and 1925 that are glued to the wall. Some are of agricultural products, others women’s fashion from the 1920s. One departmental worker had an interest in soldiers who were killed in action in World War One, specifically in 1917. A newspaper report on the deaths of these men forms part of this almost century old collage.

On 24 November 2014 the lights came on for Colour Me Brisbane, a spectacular after dark illumination of some of Brisbane’s best loved and signature landmarks, one of the features of the G20 Cultural Celebrations.

The 1829 Queen’s Wharf Commissariat Store is one of the buildings featured in the son et lumieres (sound and light) shows. ‘Where the forest meets the sea’ is an interactive experience by lighting designer Beh Wattenberg and created by Andrew Gibbs (Human Creative) and Richard De Souza. Birds and insects sculpted with LED adorn the riverside façade of the building.

Queen’s Park is another of the sites used for the spectacular. The changing face of Brisbane evolves across the park façade of the Treasury Hotel. Images showcasing Queensland history are projected on the park façade of the Old State Library. The music which accompanies the Queen’s Park light show is provided by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Opera Queensland.

A crocheted Sauropod family also has taken up residence in Queen’s Park.

The son et lumieres are on from 24 October to 9 November, commencing at 6.00 pm and concluding at 11.00 pm.

The Queensland Government has changed the name of the Government Precinct Redevelopment to Queen’s Wharf Brisbane. The change was announced in state parliament by Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney on 21 November 2014.

In his announcement, Mr Seeney acknowledged the history of the precinct. ‘Queen’s Wharf was the entrance to the colony and Queen’s Wharf Road was the access point for all the supplies that came into the colony into Queen Street, William Street and George Street.’

Mr Seeney indicated the change of name gives a clear identity to the place and reconnects Brisbane’s city centre to the river and its historic links in the vicinity of William Street. Mr Seeney said, ‘Queen’s Wharf will one day become nationally and internationally recognised as one of Brisbane’s icons.’ The development of a casino in the area is a possibility.

By the end of 2013 private sector expressions of interest for the redevelopment of the precinct will be called.
